And the Winners Are… (How Did I Do?)
Hey Nusies,
The Tony Awards were last night. Let’s see how I (I mean, they) did!
Kimberly Akimbo with five wins (including best musical), Some Like it Hot and Leopoldstadt (best play) with four wins each, Life of Pi with three wins, Parade (best musical revival) and Sweeney Todd with two wins each and one Tony Award each for New York, New York, Shucked, Prima Facie, Good Night, Oscar, Topdog/Underdog (best play revival), and the Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window.
Here is the Tony winner’s breakdown. Let’s see how I did in my predictions!
Best Musical: Kimberly Akimbo
I almost chose this, but I had picked Some Like It Hot. Both are excellent shows so I’m not even salty.
Best Revival of a Musical: Parade
Hands down. Honestly, I would’ve questioned the sanity of the voters if they hadn’t picked this. I was right though.
Best Book of a Musical: Kimberly Akimbo
Best Original Score: Kimberly Akimbo
Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical: J. Harrison Ghee (Some Like it Hot)
Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical: Victoria Clark (Kimberly Akimbo)
I got all of the above right. And all well deserved.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical: Alex Newell (Shucked)
Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical: Bonnie Milligan (Kimberly Akimbo)
I got both of these wrong. I had picked Justin Cooley from Kimberly Akimbo and Julia Lester from Into the Woods. Maybe I just have a soft spot for young talent. But also Alex and Bonnie were brilliant so again, well deserved!
Best Scenic Design of a Musical: Beowulf Boritt (New York, New York)
I missed the boat on this one. I guess this is where my lack of technical knowledge hurts my picks. I loved the barn for Shucked so I picked that. New York, New York’s sets were cool though.
Best Costume Design of a Musical: Gregg Barnes, Some Like It Hot
Another well-deserved win and correct pick for me.
Best Lighting Design of a Musical: Natasha Katz, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Best Sound Design of a Musical: Nevin Steinberg, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
I got both of these wrong but that’s understandable because I really disliked the lighting and sound in Sweeney Todd, so I never would have picked them. I picked & Juliet for lighting and New York, New York for sound design, and pretty much stick to those choices as my personal faves.
Best Direction of a Musical: Michael Arden, Parade
Anything less would have been a travesty.
Best Choreography: Casey Nicholaw, Some Like It Hot
I picked & Juliet, but honestly, Casey wins it just for the chase scene alone. What was I thinking!!?
Best Orchestrations: Charlie Rosen & Bryan Carter, Some Like It Hot
Another well-deserved win and a correct pick for me.
And I didn’t do many picks for plays, but of the four I picked, three were correct. So that was fun!
Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play: Brandon Uranowitz, Leopoldstadt
Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play: Miriam Silverman, The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window
Best Play: Leopoldstadt - Author: Tom Stoppard
The only one I didn’t get in this category was the Best Revival of a Play. But that’s okay.
Here are the rest of the winners, for those who are curious.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play: Sean Hayes, Good Night, Oscar
Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play: Jodie Comer, Prima Facie
Best Scenic Design of a Play: Tim Hatley & Andrzej Goulding, Life of Pi
Best Costume Design of a Play: Brigitte Reiffenstuel, Leopoldstadt
Best Lighting Design of a Play: Tim Lutkin, Life of Pi
Best Sound Design of a Play: Carolyn Downing, Life of Pi
Best Direction of a Play: Patrick Marber, Leopoldstadt
Best Revival of a Play: Suzan-Lori Parks' Topdog/Underdog
So for anyone counting, I got 11 of the 19 categories I actually picked. Not too shabby.
And for those like me who like data…
