Dear Delta Nusies, we’ve been way too out of touch…
Hi our Delta Nusies...I know it’s been ages since you’ve heard from us and I want to apologize for that. We are not the most fastidious bloggers (or Instgrammers) and life has been a little chaotic (but isn’t it always).
Here’s what’s happened since our last blog post on … October 30!!! WTH.
I guess my only excuse is that in the last three months, I quit my job, was catering as a temp gig, got a new job and I’ve been learning the ropes. Perle has been looking for a job as an animator while going temp gigs like catering, Broadway promotions and drawing for Humanitrack. We’ve also had friends and family visit, thrown parties, watched debates with other Buttigieg fans (and met Pete and Chasten at two different events...eeek), sang our hearts out at nerdeoke (Way Station) and Marie’s (where we have been christened the Glitteratzi), done the whole holiday thing, celebrated birthdays and just got on with living, you know.
But that’s not the point. I’m sure I should get to the theatre stuff. So, in the last three months, we’ve seen and done quite a few things.
Here are the bullet points:
We went to Broadway Under the Stars (Come From Away and Rock of Ages) and Rock of Ages looked so damn fun that we got last minute tickets and went to see that. We were right and it was amazingly fun.
We’ve gone to see A Musical About Star Wars twice more, bringing the grand total up to 4 (tying with Avenue Q for me and Wicked for Perle on most times ever seeing a musical). To say we love this show is an understatement. Taylor Crousore (if you remember one of the writers and stars) was out for several months while he player Mr. Wickham in a Pride and Prejudice musical adaptation in California and Justin Sargent, who filled in, was super adorable. But now Taylor is back and if you haven’t seen it yet, go see it.
We saw the Illusionists, which I didn’t know what to expect of it. I’m from Vegas and I’ve seen magic shows, including the fantastic Penn and Teller, but this was above and beyond. The theatricality was amazing and the tricks were pretty cool too. Plus it doesn’t hurt that the magicians are mostly young and cute. Now you see me?
I took Perle to see Newsies at the White Plain Performing Arts Center for her birthday. Personally, I liked it even more than the touring production I saw at the Kimmel Center in Philly. The cast was great, the energy was high and the musical director/conductor totally took a picture with us. (Conductors are my mailmen...ref: Good Place). We also brought oour newly minted parody newspaper that I made with our close friend Nathaniel (who was with us for the trip). I did the majority of the writing and Nathaniel laid it out so well it looks like a proper paper.
That was another thing I did. I (and Nathaniel) made this brilliant (if I do say so myself) parody newspaper of all sorts of musicals and plays. We stuck with theatre and animated works and it’s so good. If you want a copy, message me and I can email mockups.
Anyway, back to where I was. We went to a Campy Caberet production at the West End Theatre to see Disney Villains songs (delightful) and I caught the incomparable Billy Recce at the 54 Below New Writer’s Showcase. Since meeting Billy, the composer of A Musical About Star Wars, I have been blown away by his talent, his humor and his kindness. He’s quite a guy.
We also went to a Broadway DJ Dance Party by the same people who do the Disney nights. Perle was dressed as Ivy Lynn playing Marilyn Monroe and I was dressed as Karen Cartwright playing Marilyn Monroe. We SMASHed it and were total BOMBSHELLs…(See what I did there)?
Anyway, then there was BroadwayCon, where we dressed as Newsies and showed off our choreo skills at the LipSync Battle. Honestly, I should have covered BroadwayCon for the blog and posted on social media. Whoops. I went to an awesome Alice By Heart panel, met a lot of cool people and saw brilliant cosplay. All in all an excellent day.
I watched a high school production of Sense and Sensibility at my niece's school and am going to see my niece in the middle school’s production of Frozen Jr. at the end of the month. I also caught Mean Girls on Broadway. It was so fetch and Grey Henson is a tapdancing god. Or as he put it “a sweaty homosexual.” Same thing. Love is love. Perle didn’t go to Mean Girls, but she went to Frozen instead. Next time our friend wins tickets, we’re going to switch places.
Coming up in the next month or so, we have Swan Lake, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Jagged Little Pill and hopefully Little Shop of Horrors (I love you Christian). I’m also going to the Alice By Heart book reading on Friday by Steven Sater.
So that’s all folks, and I’m going to try and do better about posting. Is there anything in particular you want us to write about? Reviews, thoughts, random observations, interviews?
Until next time,
Sincerely, us.
